I love to learn! I am curious about everything and I like challenges. Solving problems using a naïve approach and perceiving trends is some of things I think I do best. I work hard everyday to be at the forefront of knowledge and to devise novel and different means to solve problems! Let us put my brain working for the betterment of mankind.

I AM A MEDICAL DOCTOR

I've graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Unversity of Lisbon in 2012. I've been a consultant at a local hospital in neuroimaging for pre-surgical planning. I am planning to further advanced medicine by combining knowledge from different fields.

I AM A PHYSICS ENGINEER AND I HAVE A PHD IN PHYSICS
I've graduated from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon in 2001. I also did my PhD at IST, in the topic of nanotechnologies applied to medicine. My PhD work was done at INESC - Microsystems and Nanotechnologies and at the Bioengineering Research Group, Department of Chemistry, IST.

I AM AN INNOVATOR AND ENTREPRENEUR
I always innovate in the places I work, either sprouting and developing new routes of research, devising novel devices and applications, creating new courses and even starting new ventures. I was a founder and CEO of Haloris Nanotechnologies and I also inspired others to follow.

I AM A TEACHER
I try also to innovate in classes, with regards both to content and evaluation. My students at classes have done works that were communicated, published or released in the internet; they even have done short films! Presently at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon I teach mainly Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics students. I am responsible for the courses on Nanotechnologies in Biomedicine; Tissue Engineering and Artificial Organs; Medical Robotics and Neurosciences.

I AM A SCIENTIST

I am senior researcher at the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. My main areas of research include Medical Imaging (mainly magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and breast but more recently also on multimodal imaging namely positron-emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging) and Human-Computer Interfaces/Physiological Computing (which include brain-computer interfaces, muscle computer interfaces, gesture recognition optical devices, eye-tracking, and interfaces resourcing to electrocardiograhy and oxymetry). Finally, I also collaborating in other topics related to Microvascular research, Nanorobotics, Hyperthermia and the development of Smart-materials for biomedical applications.

I USE THE

Be curious! Get inspired by what you see around you: nature, people, the everyday life. What challenges are you or other people facing? Cultivate a selective "ignorance": know just enough about a field in order to be able to start asking questions!

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

INQUIRE

Once you've identified the challenge, start with a blank sheet of paper: use your "ignorance" to think about solutions no matter how different or strange they may feel. Desing you solution. Compare with what others have thought on the matter. Fine tune your solution: others may have a better way or you may have something truly unique! Actually, it is quite hard to be original: always someone, sometime and somewhere in the world, may have thought similarly! That's ok: great minds think alike! :)

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

DESIGN

Transform your idea into something real: either it may be a song or a poem, either it may be bits and bytes, a device or something else that catch someone's eye. Open your ideas and transforms to others. Get them into reach, either using the "open communities" and DIY/maker philosophy or using the more traditional way of closed copyrights and intelectual property protection. Just don't leave it on your head or hidden in a drawer.

CURRENT PROJECTS

BRAIN CONNECTIVITY: We are probing deep into the anatomical and functional organization of the brain using medical imaging and electroencephalography data, in order to answer: how are brain networks changed in neuropsychiatric disorders? From here we aim to develop methods for an earlier and more accurate diagnosis.

PHYSIOLOGICAL COMPUTING: We are communicating with computers and devices using our own physiological signals (e.g. brainwaves and heart electrical activity) in order to develop novel gaming inspired approaches to prevent cognitive decline and for neuro-rehabilitation.

NANOMEDICINE AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE: its a come back to the origins but with a novel flavour. We are designing and building a platform for nanorobotics, working with gold and magnetic nanoparticles for drug-delivery and hyperthermia, and developing smart materials for tissue engineering scaffolds.

MIBCA TOOLBOX RELEASED

Our Multimodal Imaging Brain Connectivity Analysis (MIBCA) toolbox has been finally released to help neuroscientists to speed up their brain connectivity research.

Take a look at the MIBCA toolbox and accompanying  PeerJ paper. You may be also interested in our IEEE TNS paper with a preliminary application to Alzheimer's Disease!

BRAIN CONNECTIVITY LEAP

Get ready for be amazed! The Brain Connectivity Leap (BCL) is an app that allows you to see brain connectivity in virtual reality! It uses Leap Motion + Oculus Rift + Unity3D.

Check it out the BCL!
